Roman Bacchus Mosaic Panel
3rd-4th century AD. A substantial mosaic panel depicting Bacchus (Greek Dionysus) god of agriculture, wine and fertility, with long braided hair and fruit in the field, '????[?]...' legend below; mounted in a custom-made matrix and frame. 11.7 kg, 79 x 79cm including frame (31 x 31"). From a private collection, the property of a Canadian gentleman living in London; from his father's collection formed in the late 1960s to 1980s. Dionysus was said to be the last god to join the twelve Olympians, Hestia gave up her seat for him.
Very fine condition. An impressive display piece.
