Description

AUSTRALIA. Victoria, 1837-1901. Gold Sovereign, 1887-S, Sydney. Hairlines, otherwise almost uncirculated with highly reflective, mirrored fields. 7.99 g. 22.05 mm. Marsh 138 A; S.3868A. The 1887-S Jubilee head sovereign is the scarcest in the jubilee head series. According to David Iverson ('The Jubilee Head Sovereign', published 2015), only 6 dies were made, each with different J.E.B. This particular coin is the first type named DISH.S1, easily recognised for the double struck B, rests showing above. Of the 2,002,000 coins minted in Sydney in 1887 it is estimated that only 372,000 coins are Jubilee heads, leaving only 62,000 on average for each J.E.B. type. Hairlines, otherwise almost uncirculated with highly reflective, mirrored fields.
