Description

SWEDEN. Karl XIV Johan, 1818-44. Ducat, 1821 LB, Stockholm, 3.48 g. KM-594, Fr-84, Ahlstrom 16.
First bare head facing right, abbreviated legend around: CARL XIV JOHAN SVERIGES NORR·G·OCH V·K·. / Crowned square shield-of-arms within circular Seraphim Order chain, divided date and mintmark below. King's motto in surrounding legend reads FOLKETS KÄRLEK MIN BELÖNING (The love of the people is my reward).
Light weakness in king's hair, lively lustre and a hint of old toning. A few light scratches in obverse fields do not detract from the eye-appeal of this impressive early ducat from the first king of the Bernadotte dynasty.
