Description

SWEDEN. Johan III, 1568-92. 2 Daler ND (1587), Stockholm. 58.06 g. Ahlstrom 20; Dav. 572. Johan III took great interest in education, art and culture, including heraldry and the design of his coins. Similar to the leading European nations of the time he wanted to mint large presentation pieces that would eradicate any doubts of his greatness. Multiple-daler denominations were struck in 1586/7 in Vadstena and in 1587 in Stockholm. The Stockholm 2 daler offered here is the only type that is realistically obtainable and although the type is not rare, most coins have been mounted. This piece shows extraordinary detail, seen best in the king's armor and beard. The weakness often seen on the reverse is very minor. Pleasant toning, approaching extremely fine and rare as such.
