Description

Fenicia. Byblos. Estátera. 365-350 a. C. (Sng Cop-132). (Bmc-4f). Anv.: Galera a izquierda con tres guerreros con casco y escudos redondos, proa que termina en cabeza de león, debajo hipocampo sobre murex a izquierda. Rev.: León a izquierda atacando a toro por su espalda, encima leyenda fenicia. Ag. 13,23 g. Ejemplar muy centrado. EBC-/MBC+. Est...1400,00.

Estátera de fuerte expresividad que no puede pasar desapercibido por la gran plasticidad de sus escenas. En anverso una galera de guerra, a izquierda, donde viajan tres hoplitas portando escudos redondos y delante de ellos cabeza de león, todo ello sobre olas en zigzag. Debajo hipocampo nadando a la izquierda sobre murex (molusco gasterópodo, caracol marino). Entre el hipocampo y las olas, lertras fenicias "NO". En reverso: León a la izquierda, atacando a un toro arrodillado, encima leyenda fenicia. Byblos es una ciudad ubicada en el Líbano, al norte del país. Situada en una colina, antigua ciudad fenicia, denominada Gubla en los textos cuneiformes y Gebal en la Biblia. Los griegos la llamaban Byblos debido a su participación en el comercio de exportación de papiros (byblos en griego). Se cree que se fundó alrededor del año 5.000 a. C. y, según fuentes atribuidas al historiador fenicio Sanjuniatón, fue construida por Crono, siendo la primera ciudad fenicia. Actualmente es reconocida como la ciudad más antigua del mundo habitada ininterrumpidamente. Byblos parece haber sido la primera de las ciudades fenicias en emitir monedas en el siglo V a.C.

Stater with a strong expressivity that can´t be unnoticed due to the great plasticity in its scenes. On the obverse, a war galley to the left, where 3 hoplites travel bearing round shields, in front of them lion´s head, everything over zigzag sea waves. Under a hippocampus swiming left over a murex (Gastropod Mollusc: sea snail). Between the hippocampus and seawaves, phoenician letters "NO". On the reverse: Lion on the left, attacking a kneeling bull, above a phoenician inscription. Byblos it´s a city in Lebanon, in the north of the country. Settled in a hill, former Phoenician town, named Gubla in the cuneiform texts, and Gebal in the Bible. The greeks called it Byblos due to its envolment in the export commerce of papyrus scrolls (byblos in greek). It´s believed that it was found around the year 5000 b.C. and, according to sources attributed to the phoenician historian Sanchuniathon, it was built by Chronos, being the 1st Phoenician town.. Nowadays it´s recognized as the oldest city in the world inhabitated permanently. Byblos seems to have been the 1st of the Phoenician cities issuing coins in the 5th Century b.C.
