ROMAN EMPIRE: LOT of 26 silver denarii of the women of the Severan dynasty, including Julia Domna (10), Julia Maesa (3), Plautilla (5), Julia Soaemias, and Julia Mamaea (7), featuring a variety of reverse types, housed in protective plastic capsules; average grade VF to VF-EF, retail value $1200; lot of 26 pieces. More than just wives and mothers, the women of the Severan dynasty dominated the affairs of the state and were key players in a dynasty that saw a spate of brief, ineffectual rulers whose reigns ended in assassinations and executions.
