Description

ROMAN EMPIRE: Balbinus, 238 AD, AE sestertius (20.08g), Rome (238), S-8494, laureate bust of Balbinus // CONDORIA AVGG, Concordia seated left, holding patera & cornucopiae; lovely example, with attractive portrait of Balbinus, VF-EF, S. Balbinus was one of six emperors who reached the throne in 238. First was Maximinus, assassinated at Aquileia about May or June that year, but the rebellions had begun in March. Between 22 March and 9 July, four individials reached the throne, Gordian I, his son Gordian II, Balbinus, and Pupienus, until finally, the throne passed on 29 July to Gordian III, who would remain emperor for six years.
