Description

PAMPHYLIA: Anonymous, ca. 205-100 BC, AR tetradrachm (15.66g), Side, helmeted head of Athena right // Nike flying left, holding wreath; to left, pomegranate above magistrate initials, ΔIOΔ, countermarked bow in bowcase within circular incuse with initials, F-VF. Similar countermarks were applied in other Asia Minor cities, and Price has linked these countermarks to the introduction of the cistophoric coinage circa 180 BC. Their use allowed Attic-weight coins to continue to circulate in the post-reform years.
