Description

OTTOMAN TUNIS
Ahmed III (1115-1143ah / 1703-1730ce)
Lot of 2 – apparently unpublished – gold coins:
a. ¼ sultani 1128ah (1715ce) -unc (w/plugged hole, scratches, 70% gold content), 0.78g
b. ¼ sultani 1188ah (1775ce) -xf (holed, 81% gold content), 0.86g It would also seem feasible that these coins – the second one dates from the reign of Abdul Hamid I – could well have been minted as contemporary forgeries which were eventually holed in order to take them out of circulation. Both of them reveal a rather strange combination having been minted with the weight of a quarter sultani but in the module of a half. Nevertheless, both were produced in yellow gold and in a "more authentic" style, especially when compared to the coins in Lot # 35.
