Description

Gordien III (238-244) Aureus - Rome (241) Très rare et d’une qualité remarquable. 4.57g - Cal. 3191 FDC - MS The reverse of this aureus struck in AD 241 shows Diana Lucifera, “Diana, the bringer of light”, which is a hopeful call for a more peaceful time after the dark times of AD 238 (the so-called “Year of the Six Emperors”): Gordian III had been proclaimed Caesar after the defeat of his grandfather Gordian I, and emperor after the murder of Balbinus and Pupienus, and this coin was struck when he appointed Timesitheus as Praetorian Prefect, to mentor him and help get some independence from the Senate.
