Description

Titus (79-81) Aureus - Rome (77-78) Magnifique exemplaire. Deux légères marques sur la tranche. 7.31g - Cal. 738a Superbe - AU The reverse type advertises the military successes of Rome under Vespasian and Titus. Roma, the eponymous goddess of the city, is depicted seated in triumph on the captured arms of her enemies, accompanied by birds, watching over the city’s founders, the twins Romulus and Remus as they are suckled by the she-wolf. It copies, with a Romanized style, an anonymous denarius issued in c. 115/114 BC (ref. Crawford 287/1). The identification of the birds has been debated, as they could be eagles or ravens (symbols of victory), but also woodpeckers – as sources say that a picus brought food to the twins.
