(drachmes) Superbe - CHOICE XF Heraclea Pontica, on the coast of Bithynia at the mouth of the river Lycus, had been founded by the city of Megara in c. 560-558. Its name came from the Greek belief that Heracles had entered the underworld at a cave on the adjoining Archerusian promontory, and it became one of the most important harbors on the Black Sea coast. Oligarchs dominated the city in the fourth century BC, before being overthrown and replaced by a dynasty of tyrants founded by Klearchos (364-352 BC).
