Description

★ Altered TR P Date ★

CARACALLA (198-217). Denarius. Rome.

Obv: ANTONINVS PIVS AVG BRIT.
Laureate head right.
Rev: P M TR P XV COS III P P.
Elephant standing right.

Cf. RIC 199; cf. CNG 72, lot 1577 (for a similar re-engraving).

The dies for these coins were originally prepared during Caracalla's TR P XIIII, but were re-engraved to correspond to TR P XV, hence the odd reading of the reverse legend, with a 'V' over the first two 'II,' and the final two 'II' are somewhat erased. Very rare

Condition: Very fine.

Weight: 2.66 g.
Diameter: 19 mm.
