Description

★ Nike with Palm Frond ★

KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III 'the Great' (336-323 BC). GOLD Stater. Ephesos.

Obv: Helmeted head of Athena right.
Rev: AΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ.
Nike standing left, holding wreath and palm frond. Controls: In left field, bee between Ε - Φ.

Price 1875; cf. Roma XVI, lot 217 = Künker 304, lot 295 = Gorny & Mosch 224, lot 146.

Alexander-style coinage from Ephesos was not at all widely produced and is seldom seen. Adding to this intrigue is the use of a palm frond rather than the usual stylis. This is paralleled at Miletos, which may indicate military preparations there rather than the typical naval activities. Extremely rare.

Condition: Good very fine, lustrous.

Weight: 8.57 g.
Diameter: 19 mm.
