Description

GERMANIC TRIBES. Uncertain. GOLD Solidus (5th century). Imitating a Constantinople mint issue of Theodosius II.

Obv: D N THEOOOSIVS (sic) P F AVG.
Helmeted and cuirassed bust facing slightly right, holding spear and shield decorated with horseman motif.
Rev: IIIP (sic) XXXXII COS XVII P P / CONO8 (sic).
Constantinopolis seated left on throne, with foot set upon prow, holding globus cruciger and sceptre, and resting elbow upon shield; star to left.

Cf. RIC 321; cf. Depeyrot 84/1; cf. CNG 72, lot 2266 (for a similar solidus).

Very rare

Condition: Extremely fine, mark on the reverse.
