★ Ariadne and the Grotto of Naxos ★

MYSIA. Pergamum. Septimius Severus with Julia Domna (193-211). Ae Medallion. Claudianus Terpander, strategos.

Obv: AVT KAI Λ CЄΠ CЄOVHPOC ΠЄP / IOV ΔOMNA CЄBACTH.
Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Septimius Severus and draped bust of Julia Domna facing one another; c/m: laureate head of Caracalla right within incuse circle.
Rev: ЄΠI CTPA KΛAVΔIANOV TЄPΠANΔPOV / ΠЄPΓAMHNΩN B NЄOKOPΩN.
Ariadne reclining left in the grotto of Naxos, in gesture of sleep, being discovered by maenad, holding thyrsus and crown, and satyr, holding lagobolon.

SNG BN 2210; Triton XIX, lot 358 (which realized a hammer of $7,000) = Gemini II, lot 495. For c/m: Howgego 70.

Ariadne, having been deserted by Theseus in the sacred grotto of Naxos, was discovered by Dionysos who made her his wife and to whom she bore many children. As Pergamum had strong links to the cult of Dionysos, Ariadne's time in the grotto is represented here on this rare and impressive medallion.

Condition: Very fine.
