Ariadne, having been deserted by Theseus in the sacred grotto of Naxos, was discovered by Dionysos who made her his wife and to whom she bore many children. As Pergamum had strong links to the cult of Dionysos, Ariadne's time in the grotto is represented here on this rare and impressive medallion.
