Description

IONIA. Uncertain. Philip II (Caesar, 244-247). Ae. Uncertain magistrate.

Obv: M IOY ΦIΛIΠΠOC KAICAP.
Bareheaded, draped and cuirassed bust right.
Rev: [...].
Tyche standing left, holding cornucopia and statue of Artemis Ephesia; lighted altar to left.

Cf. SNG Copenhagen 1777 (for a similar style obverse from Samos).

The letter forms on the reverse of this type are highly bazaar and difficult to determine, therefore, this may be an imitative issue of fairly good style. The obverse does share a close resemblance to one of Samos, so a tentative attribution to the area of Ionia is proposed.

Condition: Very fine.

Weight: 10.64 g.
Diameter: 28 mm.
