Description

★ Interesting Muling of Types ★

KINGS OF THRACE (Macedonian). Lysimachos (305-281 BC). Drachm. Uncertain mint.

Obv: Head of Herakles right, wearing lion skin.
Rev: ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ / ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ.
Athena seated left on throne, holding Nike and spear over shoulder. Controls: Grape bunch to inner left; ΔΙ in exergue.

Thompson -.

A highly unusual muling of Alexander and Lysimachos types, this piece features reverse controls which are similar to a Lysimachos-style tetradrachm tentatively attributed to Alexandreia Troas. A possible explanation would be that the two types were being issued contemporaneously, and were accidentally muled. Though highly unlikely, it would at least provide an explanation for the pairing of the two types.

Condition: Very fine.

Weight: 4.10 g.
Diameter: 19 mm.
