Description

EMPIRE of THESSALONICA. Theodore Comnenus-Ducas (1224-1230). Tetarteron. Thessalonica mint (1227).

Obv: ΘΕΟΔWPOC ΔVKAC O AΓHOC ΔHMITPO.
Half-length facing figures of Theodore, on the left, and St. Demetrius, on the right nimbate and holding sword and shield, on either side of a patriarchal cross-crosslet on base and three steps.
Rev: +ΘΕΟΔωΡΟC EN Χω Τω Θω ΠΙCΤΟC ΒΑCΙΛΕVC ΚΑΙ ΑVΤΟΚΡΑΤωΡ ΡωΜΑΙωΝ Ο ΔΥΚΑ in seven lines.

DOC 11 and pl. XL; Hendy -; Sear-Bendall 2169. LHS Auction 97/167 (2006) and Goldberg Auction 53/2382 (2009) for the only other known example in the market.

The second known and by far the better preserved example. A once in a lifetime opportunity for every serious collector of Byzantine coins!
