Description

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 290-281 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 22 mm, 8.04 g, 3 h), Sim... and Her.... Nude ephebe on horse prancing to right, placing wreath on horse's head; behind, Nike flying to right, crowning the rider; below, ΣΙΜ. Rev. ΤΑΡΑΣ Phalanthos seated astride dolphin to left, holding trident with his left hand and rising kantharos with his right hand; below dolphin's tail, ⊢HP; below, waves. Fischer-Bossert Group 62, 789-791 (V309/--- not recorded reverse die). HN III 886. Vlasto 503-507. A well-struck sharp and toned example, nicely struck in very fine silver. Irregular flan and some striking faults, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
