Description

CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 344-340 BC. Nomos (Silver, 22 mm, 7.67 g, 3 h). Helmeted ephebe, nude, holding a small round shield and a lance with his left hand and the reins with his right, riding to right; below horse,⊣. Rev. ΤΑΡΑΣ Phalanthos, nude, riding dolphin to left, holding kotyle in his outstretched right hand and resting his left hand on the dolphin's back; below, Π above waves. Fischer-Bossert 672 (V256/R521). HN III 878. Vlasto 448. A toned example, struck from particularly artistic dies. Rough area on the obverse and overstruck on a Corinthian-type stater (remains of helmeted Athena on the reverse), otherwise, about extremely fine.
