Description

THESSALY. Pherai. Circa 460-440 BC. Drachm (Silver, 20 mm, 5.87 g, 9 h). Γ-Λ-Α The hero Thessalos, nude but for petasos hanging down behind his back, striding right; restraining a bull rushing to right by use of a band, held with both hands, that passes around the bull's head. Rev. Φ-[Ε]-R-Α-Ι Bridled horse trotting to right, with trailing rein; to left, lion’s head fountain spout with water pouring from its jaws; all within incuse square. BCD Thessaly II 682. Jameson 1105. Very rare. Toned and attractive, but with slightly rough surfaces, nevertheless, one of the finest known early drachms of Pherai. Good very fine.
