THRACO-MACEDONIAN TRIBES, Derrones. Circa 480-465 BC. Dodekadrachm (Silver, 36 mm, 39.22 g). Male driver, wearing petasos and robes, seated to right on a throne-like chair mounted on a two-wheeled ox-cart, holding the reins in his left hand and a curious goad in his raised right; above, crested Corinthian helmet to right; below oxen, elaborate disc. Rev. Triskeles to right on plain field. Apparently unpublished save for its previous auction appearance. An impressive, strong and bold coin, toned and a wild, primitive vigor. Some metal faults, otherwise, good very fine.

From a Swiss collection, ex Triton XVII, 7 January 2014, 113 (apparently sold with what was described as being a "Greek export certificate").

This was one of the biggest Greek silver coins ever struck, and was designed solely to enable the states that controlled the mines of northern Greece to export bullion silver in monetary form. The Triton cataloguer suggested that the male figure on the obverse was both king and high priest; breaking new ground it was also suggested that the helmet was a "military reference".
