Description

KINGS OF SKYTHIA. Sariakos, mid 2nd century BC. (Bronze, 24 mm, 9.28 g). Head of Herakles right, wearing lion's skin headdress. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ - ΣΑΡΙΑΚΟΥ Bow, quiver, and grain ear; between them, possible traces of a monogram. Peykov G0420. Extremely rare, one of a very few known examples. Attractive dark green, glossy patina. Good very fine.

From the Trausnitz Collection, ex Kunker 62, 13 March 2001, 39.

Little is known about Sariakos, other than that he was a king who struck coins and was mentioned in an inscription found in Bulgaria. He has been given a variety of dates, all basically in the 2nd century BC (c.179/168-150 ?), but others place him towards the end of the century (and others have dated him up into the 3rd century).
