Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 25 mm, 17.33 g, 9 h), struck under Gelon I, circa 480-478. Male charioteer, wearing a long chiton and holding a goad in his right hand and the reins in both, driving a quadriga with horses walking to right; above Nike flying right to crown the horses. Rev. ΣVR-ΑΚΟΣ-ΙΟ-Ν Head of Arethusa to right, wearing necklace, pearl diadem and with her hair, tied in a krobylos, bound up and falling over her diadem; around, four dolphins swimming clockwise. Boehringer 87 (V42/R56). HGC 2, 1306. Randazzo 250 ( same dies. Clear and well-centered on both sides. Some striking flatness and minor edge break on the reverse, otherwise, about extremely fine.
