Description

SICILY. Katane. Circa 461-450 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 28 mm, 17.30 g, 6 h). The river god Amenanos, portrayed as a bearded man-headed bull swimming to right; above, branch; below, fish swimming to right (probably a grey mullet). Rev. ΚΑΤΑΝΕ Nike alighting to left, holding ribbons in her right hand. Cf. Randazzo 54 ff. (O54/R---). Elegant, well-struck from new dies and very attractively toned. Struck from a hitherto unknown reverse die. Very rare. Extremely fine.

From a Swiss collection, and from the Comery Collection, Roma 6, 29 September 2013. 383 ( there termed unique ).
