Description

SICILY. Gela. Circa 450-440 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 27.5 mm, 16.84 g, 2 h). Male charioteer driving quadriga walking slowly to the right; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses; in exergue, [palmette with tendrils]. Rev. ϹΕΛΑΣ Forepart of man-headed bull to right. Jenkins 361 var (O69/R-, unrecorded reverse die ). SNG ANS 66 ( same obverse die ). Very attractively toned, and with a reverse of great elegance, perfectly struck from a fresh die. Obverse struck off-center from a worn die, otherwise, virtually as struck.
