CALABRIA. Tarentum. Circa 240-228 BC. Didrachm or nomos (Silver, 19 mm, 6.56 g, 4 h), Xenokrates. ΞΕ-ΝΟΚΡ / ΑΤ-ΗΣ Armored cavalryman, riding horse moving to left, raising his right hand in salute and turning his bearded head, with wildly flowing hair, to face the viewer; in upper field to right, monogram of ΤΚΡ. Rev. ΤΑΡΑΣ Phalanthos, nude, riding dolphin to left, his body slightly turned back to right, holding a trident over his right shoulder in his right hand, and holding his drapery, flowing from the back of the dolphin and behind Phalanthos, in his upraised left. Cf. HN III 1058, SNG Paris 2058, and Vlasto 955-961 n ( but all with a pileus on the obverse and a monogram on the reverse, absent here ). Apparently an unknown variety. A lovely, sharp and most attractive piece. Good extremely fine.
