Description

GREEK COINS
EGYPT
Ptolemy I Soter, as satrap, 323-305 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26mm, 17.37 g 12), Alexandria, 320. Head of Alexander the Great to right, wearing elephant’s scalp, horn of Ammon and aegis. Rev. ΑΛΕΞΑΝΔΡΟΥ Zeus seated left on throne, holding eagle in his right hand and long scepter in his left; to left, vertical thunderbolt; below throne, ΡΥ. Svoronos, 20. Zervos B-VII. An unusually fine example struck in high relief. Beautifully toned and with excellent surfaces. Extremely fine. From the Chrysos Collection, acquired in Geneva in 1980. This is a remarkably attractive coin! The relief is very high and the head of Alexander has the kind of expressively powerful features that are characteristic of Hellenistic art.
