Description

GREEK COINS
EGYPT
Nektanebo II, 361-343 BC. Stater (Gold, 15mm, 8.23 g 11). Horse prancing to right. Rev. Two hieroglyphic signs: pectoral necklace ( nebew = gold) crossing over a heart and windpipe ( nefer = good); or good gold . Faucher, Fischer-Bossert & Dhenin 2 (D1/R2). SNG Copenhagen 1 ( same dies ). Of great rarity and interest. Well struck and clear. Nearly extremely fine. From the Chrysos Collection, acquired in Geneva in 1980, and almost certainly from the Mit Rahineh hoard of 1912-1920 (IGCH 1658). This is one of a very few surviving examples of the only truly Egyptian coin ever struck: the types are purely derived from ancient Egyptian prototypes (the reverse shows, in fact, two hieroglyphic signs), rather than copying foreign issues (Athenian tetradrachms for example).
