European Medals from 1513 to 1788
Netherlands, The Dutch Republic. Circular Medal Container (Silver, 76mm, 78.03 g), a circular, two part box for holding a medal: when closed it is 9mm thick. The top, which is a total of 4mm thick, slides onto the bottom, 9 mm thick, forming the closed box. The bottom contains considerable remains of an original black cloth lining, while the top lining is mostly detached and fragmentary. The exterior surfaces of both the top and bottom are lightly decorated with lathe-turned concentric circles, unmarked, but mid 17th century. An interesting and intriguing example of the kind of box that was used to present and store medals during the Dutch Golden Age. Minor marks and other signs of age, but heavily toned - an over-all pleasing object, about extremely fine.
