European Medals from 1513 to 1788
Netherlands, The Dutch Republic. Frederik Hendrik, Prince of Orange-Nassau, Stadtholder, 1625-1647. Medal (Silver, 59mm, 60.5 g 12), on the capture of ‘s Hertogenbosch, Wesel and the fortresses protecting the Veluwe by the prince’s army, by an unknown engraver after J. van Looff, 1629. ORDD.CONFŒD. BELG.AVSP:PR.FRED.HENR.FORT. / SILVA_DVCIS / CAPTA (= ‘s Hertogenbosch taken under the auspices of the United Provinces and by the bravery of Prince Frederik Hendrik ) Prince Frederik, wearing full armor, on horse prancing to left before a view of ‘s Hertogenbosch with soldiers marching in the foreground. Rev. +VESALIA EXPVGNATA. / VELAVIA LIBERATA. / OPORTVNE VINDICAS CAVSA TVA DOMINE. (= Wesel taken, the Veluwe freed: you <God> defend your cause, at the right time ) Above, view of the city of Wesel; below, view of the Veluwe with the two fort­resses abandoned by the Spanish; at the bottom, 16-29.
