European Medals from 1513 to 1788
Netherlands, The Dutch Republic. 1594. Medal (Silver, 51.5mm, 45.09 g 12), on the defeat of an attempted invasion by the Spanish, by G. van Bylaer, 1596. (rose)RVMPTVRx HAVDxFACILEx (= not easy to tear apart ) Hand of God emerging from the clouds and holding cords binding the arms of England, France and the Dutch Republic. Rev. xQVIDxMExPERSEQVERISx15-96 (= Why do You persecute me? , Acts.ix. 4) Hebrew name of Jehovah in clouds and rays; below, scenes of the destruction of the Spanish fleet off Cape Finisterre. Eimer 67. MI I, pp. 163-164, 148. Van Loon I, p. 476, i. A lovely, well-struck and beautifully toned example. Good extremely fine. obverse of this medal was initially designed to commemorate the alliance between England, France and the United Provinces, but was then used later the same year to celebrate the double destruction of the Spanish fleet: first when the English fleet attacked Calais and destroyed all of Philip II’s invasion material, and then when a storm destroyed another Spanish fleet off Cape Finisterre.
