European Medals from 1513 to 1788
Germany, Bamberg. 1537. Medal (Bronze, 37.6mm, 18.70 g 12), on Wolfgang Hopf, an original cast by Matthes Gebel. WOLF HOPPF SEINS ALTERS XVIIII IAR Bare-headed bust of Wolfgang Hopf to right, wearing fine robes. Rev. SELIG SIND DIE FRIDFERTIGEN M D XXXVII Ornate, helmeted arms within an inner laurel wreath. Habich I, 2, 1143. Very rare. An original cast with a lovely light, golden-brown patina. Minor edge defect and possible traces of an attempted piercing, otherwise , about extremely fine. WAG 47, 28 June 2008, 125 and Künker 82, 14 March 2003, 5494. This medal commemorates the nineteen year old Wolfgang Hopf, who became one of Bamberg’s city councilmen and, later, its mayor.
