The Low Countries, Bruxelles. Charles V, 1519-1556. Medal (Silver, 36mm, 18.39 g 12), in honor of Isabella of Portugal (1503-1539), wife of Charles V, by Jacques Jonghelinck after Leone Leoni, c. 1555. IMP.CAES.CAROLVS.V.AVG. Laureate and cuirassed bust of Charles V to right. Rev. DIVA ISABELLA AVGVSTA CAROLI V VX Bust of Isabella, three-quarter facing and turned slightly to left, wearing an elaborately embroidered gown, a pendant jewel and with her hair braided around the top of her head. This attractive cast medal was part of a series in honor of the Hapsburg rulers of the Low Countries, which were made by the great Flemish sculptor and medalist Jacques Jonghelinck after prototypes by Leone Leoni (this) and Jacopo da Trezzo (the following lot).
