Description

APULIA. Arpi. Circa 215-212 BC. (Bronze, 15.5 mm, 3.58 g, 7 h). Helmeted head of Athena right. Rev. ΑΡΠΑΝOY Bunch of grapes. Buceti 38b ( this coin, but as Tauromenion! ). HN III, 650. SNG ANS 646. Deep green patina. Very fine.

From the Vineyard Collection, ex inAsta 5, 12 October 2003, 1366 (attributed to Tauromenion).

This coin was accidentally bought by "Vineyard" as the rare Tauromenion (HGC 1604, CNS 43). Unfortunately, soon enough he realized that it was actually an issue of Arpi, but nevertheless as the inscription was different to his other example he kept the coin in his collection. Interestingly enough, this misidentification was made by an auction company in San Marino ...
