Description

ISLANDS OFF THRACE, Thasos, or a very early Celtic imitation. Circa 148-90/80 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 32 mm, 16.88 g, 10 h), a coin of very good style but with some anomalies. Head of young Dionysos to right, wearing ivy wreath. Rev. ΗΡΑΚΛΕΟΥΣ / ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ / ΘΑΣΙΩΝ Herakles standing left, nude but for lion's skin over his shoulder and left arm; resting right hand on club; to left, Μ. Le Rider 52. Cf. SNG Copenhagen 1042. Boldly struck and very attractively toned. Test cut on the reverse and pierced twice, probably to be used as jewelry, otherwise, extremely fine.

From the Vineyard Collection, ex Vinchon 25 May 1998, 484: while un-noted in the auction catalogue, an earlier pedigree going back to the 1920s can be assumed by the coin's fine surfaces and toning.
