Description

CALABRIA. Tarentum. 302-280 BC. Nomos (Silver, 22 mm, 7.56 g, 5 h). On the left, Nike standing facing, turned slightly to the right to grasp the reins and head of a galloping horse ridden to the left by an ephebe, nude but for his helmet, who holds the reins with his right hand and two javelins and a shield in his left. Rev. ΤΑΡΑΣ Taras (Phalanthos) astride dolphin to left, partially kneeling on his right knee, propped on the dolphin's back behind the fin, and extending his left leg downwards, stretching out his right hand to left and holding, in his left, a small shield inscribed E; in field to left, ZOP; below, waves. HN III 963. SNG ANS 1056. Vlasto 679-680. Very attractively toned and well-struck. Traces of corrosion on the reverse below the toning, otherwise, extremely fine.
