KINGS OF SOPHENE. Morphilig, Circa 150 BC. Dichalkon (Bronze, 15 mm, 1.42 g, 7 h). Diademed head of Morphilig to right, wearing pot-shaped tiara flanked by star to left and small crescent to right. Rev. MOΛΦIOC Uncertain figure (Anahit?) standing left, holding filleted wreath; monogram to left. ACV -. CSC -. Kovacs - Cf. CNG 85 (2010) for an example of the same obverse die. An extreme rarity in the series of the kingdom of Sophene. Missing from almost every serious collection of the area; dark green patina. Obverse slightly off center, otherwise, good fine.
From the collection of Yerets’ Kariatin, Switzerland.
The style of this coin varies significantly from the example of the same ruler published by Nercessian in ACV (no. 18), in the Berlin Collection. A Cappadocian origin for this extremely rare coin should be considered.
