Description

GREEK COINS Islands off Caria Rhodos. Rhodes, c . 408/7-404 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 21mm, 15.25g 12), signed by Tauro.... Head of Helios facing, turned slightly to the right. Rev. ΡΟΔΙΟΝ Rose with bud to left and right; to right, ΤΑΥΡΟ. Ashton 6. Bérend 20 ( this coin ) = Hecatomnus 49a (A32/P42). Very rare. An attractive piece: toned and with a remarkably fine and serene head of Apollo. Very fine. Ex Triton XVI, 8 January 2013, 499 and from the collection of A. Trampitsch, Vinchon Monaco, 13 November 1986, 226. The abbreviated name Ταυρο... on the reverse has been taken as an artist’s signature by some, but given its prominent size it must, rather, be a magistrate’s name. At this period monetary magistrates in Rhodes primarily used symbols to identify the issues for which they were responsible; the large size of this signature may have been thought of as too ostentatious, with the result that no other such bold signatures were allowed.
