Description

GREEK COINS Paphlagonia Amastris, c. 285-250 BC. Stater (Silver, 24mm, 9.57g 12). Head of Mithras to right wearing Persian mitra adorned with laurel wreath and star. Rev. ΑΜΑΣΤΡΙΕΩΝ Aphrodite seated left on throne, holding Nike and lotos-tipped scepter; below throne, monogram; to left, rose. BMFA 1362 ( same dies ). RG 11. Rare, of lovely style and very well centered. Attractively toned, nearly extremely fine. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 90, 23 May 2012, 565. From the Gallice Collection, E. Bourgey, 5 December 1932, 203 and from the collection of Gustave Burel, Feuardent, 11 June 1913, 254. This is actually a remarkably fine example of a very elusive coinage: the coinage of Amastris was struck in small numbers and lacks any modern study.
