Description

KINGS OF THRACE. Lysimachos, 305-281 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 34 mm, 17.04 g, 11 h), unidentified mint in Asia, c. 250. Diademed head of Alexander III to right, ram's horn over his ear. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ ΛΥΣΙΜΑΧΟΥ Athena seated left on throne, resting her left elbow on her shield and holding Nike in her outstretched right hand; to left, monogram of ΕΚΠ. Apparently unpublished, but see Müller 454 for a coin with the same monogram paired with another. Well struck on a broad flan, with a powerful portrait of Alexander the Great. Good very fine.

This coin shares the same monogram with the very rare series that was attributed to Silandos in Lydia by Müller (as 454, but also with the monogram of ΣI). While all the surviving examples of Müller 454 share the same obverse die, this coin is struck from another, which seems to be slightly earlier in style.
