THRACE. Maroneia. Circa 189/8-49/5 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 29 mm, 16.40 g, 1 h), circa 150s BC. Head of youthful Dionysos to right, wearing taenia and ivy wreath, and with his hair partially knotted into a queue and partially falling down the back of his neck. Rev. ΔΙΟΝΥΣΟΥ ΣΩΤΗΡΟΣ ΜΑΡΩΝΙΤΩΝ Dionysos, nude, standing to left with cloak over his left arm, holding bunch of grapes in his right hand and narthex stalks in his left; below, to left and right, two monograms. Schönert-Geiss 1094 (V38/R108). SNG Copenhagen 636. Toned and of a powerful, late Hellenistic style. Nearly extremely fine.
