Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Philistis, wife of Hieron II, 275-215 BC. 16 Litrai (Silver, 26 mm, 13.57 g, 1 h), 218/7-214. Diademed and veiled bust of Philistis to left; behind, long torch. Rev. ΒΑΣΙΛΙΣΣΑΣ / [ΦΙΛΙΣΤΙΔΟΣ] Nike driving quadriga galloping to right; below horses, Ε. Burnett, Enna 48 (same dies). CCO 36 (D11/R19). SNG ANS 886-7 (same obverse die). SNG Copenhagen 823 (same reverse die). A lovely example, with a fine portrait, an especially lively reverse, and beautiful surfaces. Reverse struck slightly off center and with minor die faults, otherwise, nearly extremely fine.
