Description

SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 26 mm, 17.38 g, 6 h), c. 483-480. Bearded charioteer driving quadriga walking to left; above, Nike flying left to crown the horses. Rev. ΣVRΑΚΟΣΙΟΝ Diademed head of Arethusa to right, her hair tied in a krobylos; around, four dolphins swimming to right. Boehringer 76. Dewing 696. Jameson 747. Randazzo 246. SNG ANS 19 (all same dies). Rare. Well-struck and well-centered on a full flan, toned and of lovely late Archaic style. Nearly extremely fine.
