Description

SICILY. Messana. Circa 438-434 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 28 mm, 17.14 g, 9 h). Charioteer driving biga of mules walking to right; above, Nike flying left to crown the driver; in exergue, olive sprig. Rev. ΜΕΣΣΑ-Ν-Ι-Ο-Ν (retrograde) Hare springing to right; above, head of bearded Pan to right; below, olive sprig. Caltabiano 423 (D183/R175). Rizzo pl. xxv, 13 (same dies). SNG Copenhagen 397 (same dies). Very rare, lightly toned and struck on a broad flan. About extremely fine.
