Description

SICILY. Kephaloidion. After Circa 241 BC. (Bronze, 19 mm, 3.49 g, 12 h). Ivy-wreathed head of a Maenad to right. Rev. KE-ΦA Dionysos, bearded and partially draped, standing left, holding a kantharos in his right hand, holding his thyrsos in his left, and resting his left elbow on a low column to right. Calciati 6. SNG Copenhagen 232. SNG München 534. Attractive dark, brown-green patina. A particularly clear example. Good very fine.

From the Vineyard Collection, ex Peus 374, 23 April 2003, 43.The head on the obverse of this coin has been identified by some as being a young Dionysos; if so, he differs from the figure of Dionysos on the reverse, who is clearly bearded. Is that likely? More probably the head on the obverse is one of Dionysos's favorite followers: a Maenad or nymph.
