★ A rare and pedigreed Stater from Siris or Berge (?) ★
THRACO-MACEDONIAN REGION. Siris, or Berge (?) . Circa 525-480 BC. Stater (Silver, 20 mm, 8.87 g). Ithyphallic satyr standing right, right hand grasping right wrist of nymph fleeing to right, his left hand supporting her chin; around, three pellets. Rev. Rough incuse square divided diagonally. AMNG III, 14, Smith Group 5 and Traité I, 1568 (all as ,Lete’). Minor flatness, otherwise . Nearly extremely fine.

This issue has been reattributed from Lete to Siris in the past, but Selene Psoma has recently argued in favor of an attribution to Berge (S. Psoma: The ’Lete’ coinage reconsidered, in: P. G. van Alfen, Agoranomia. Studies in Money and Exchange presented to John H. Kroll, New York 2006, pp. 61-85).
