Description

Macedon (Roman Protectorate). Republican period. Fourth Meris. Circa 167-149 BC. (Bronze, 22 mm, 9.51 g, 9 h), Heraclea in Pelagonia. Laureate head of Zeus to right. Rev. Club flanked by MAKEΔONΩN TETAPTHΣ; above, ME monogram, below ANK monogram; all within oak wreath with ties at the left; outer left, thunderbolt. AMNG III 188. MacKay pl. III, 12. Touratsoglou pl. VII, 26; SNG Copenhagen 1316. Weber 3709. Very rare, and with an attractive green patina. Very fine. From a European collection, acquired prior to 2005.
